October 2023 – Sightings

late October 2023

While we were away there were some excellent bird records on the island:

  • Barn Owl (one was seen several times down at the west end)
  • Waxwings (a party of 5 were reported from the Achamore area – part of a nationwide eruption)
  • Jay (also in the Achamore area, a first for Coll according to the record books! Even well-watched Tiree has only ever had one record)

11/10/2023

  • Barnacle Goose (two more flocks of c25 birds arriving from the north west)
  • Greenland White-fronted Goose (a group of 4 over the village – our first of the autumn)
  • Redwings (big movements evident overnight last night and tonight)
  • we’ll be off island for a few weeks now so will catch up on our return

09/10/2023

  • Pink-footed Goose (x170 a large skein over heading east)
  • Barnacle Goose (a steady movement of over 250 birds through the morning in flocks of 20-70)
  • Snipe (a single bird flushed from the road verge)
  • Redwing (x2 the first of the autumn and a steady flow of ‘seeping’ birds over night)
  • Juniper (several substantial plants in a new location)
  • Scots Lovage (several plants in a new location)
  • Slender Club-rush (Isolepis cernua – an under-recorded autumnal species. Several specimens on saltmarsh.)

  • Barnacle Goose (x16)
  • Pink-footed Goose (a single bird with Barnacles)
  • Lapwing (x100)
  • Buzzard
  • Hen Harrier (ring-tailed)
  • Kestrel
  • Moorhen (x4 on local loch)
  • Greenfinch (x4)
  • Twite (x40)

  • Pink-footed Goose (a single bird in local fields with Greylags yesterday and again today)

02/10/2023

  • Teal (x2 – the first of the autumn)
  • Ringed Plover (x120)
  • Sanderling (x30)
  • Turnstone (x20)
  • Redshank (x8)
  • Lesser Black-backed Gull
  • Wood Pigeon (a single bird in the village)
  • Fox Moth (x18 caterpillars on a short section of road verge)

01/10/2023

  • Barnacle Goose (x7 – first of the autumn)
  • Snow Goose (x5 – four adults and one juv)
  • Lapwing (x250)
  • Golden Plover (x12)
  • Red-tailed Bumblebee
  • White-tailed Bumblebee
  • Common Carder Bee
  • Moss Carder Bee
